2.1 El Nino

This winter is looking like it might be similar to last winter's mess.  Cold, snowy and typical of what the winters were like when your parents were a kid. Yuck!
Read and think:
1) Do you like this prediction?  Why or why not?
2) What is causing this change in weather?  How?
3) Is this a result of global warming/climate change?  How?
4)  How does El Nino which is far from here affect us in Barrie?

  1. There are many pros and cons about this prediction that make me iffy on my decision if I like it or not. This article shows that because of this El Niño year it will decrease the amount of disasters in tropical areas. There will be fewer, but the ones that come will be a lot worse. So I guess I don’t really like it because even though there will be less storms the ones that come will wipe out all the pros to it from before. Warming of the oceans surface is causing the change in the weather. Since the rise in air temperature, the oceans absorb the heat, and it warms up the ocean. This is all caused by the atmosphere warming. This is a result of global warming. Global warming is what causes the air to warm, and since the air is warming so is the ocean. The warming ocean is what causes El Nino. El Nino will take a bit to fully unravel. For it to fully bloom it has to be 0.5ºC above average for five consecutive months. But the side affects are still occurring right now. In Barrie we will be affected by our winters. It will be a lot more cold, snowy and just very miserable as a result.

    1. would you prefer a very cold, snowy winter or an extremely hot, dry summer?

  2. I do like this prediction. The reason being is that we have already experienced a bit of EL Nino in the summer. we had very bad and strong storms that developed because of it. the change in the weather is caused by the average surface temperature of the ocean near the equator rising. this causes the air currents to change and the weather gets more extreme. EL Nino is a result of climate change because the warmer the ocean gets from climate change, the more we will experience it. even though it happens far away from us, EL Nino can effect the air currents which reach us and can cause major storms which i am confident we will experience this winter.

  3. Mark this one:
The weather map and thermal temperature map of the effects of El Nino is showing that easily visible around the Equator area of the Pacific Ocean. The large yellow ring is showing us that these temperatures are much higher than usual and I believe can be linked to Climate Change. As the Sun is constantly beating down on the Equator, it makes sense it would warm up either way. It also makes sense that they would predict more storms near coast reasons because of the combination of warm air from El Nino and the cool air from the water mixing together creating those heavy storms. I believe we will also experience this very cold weather as El Nino is causing some areas to warm and some to cool and we in Canada are close to the cooling area which will affect our weather do to passing winds, and the movement of our Earth.
