2.3 September is Natural Disasters Preparedness Month

Are you ready for a big winter storm that could snow you in to your house for days?  What about a flood, what would you do to prepare for that?  Or what if you were without electricity for several days (oh my no technology!) what would you do?
Read and think:
1) Is your family prepared for a natural disasters?  Do you have a family plan to make sure everyone is safe?
2) Why do we need agencies like the USGS?  Is there something like that in Canada?
3) Other than a zombie apocalypse!  What would be the worst natural disaster to hit Barrie?  Why?
4) How accurate are these predictions made by the USGS?

my family is definitely not prepared for a natural disaster of any kind, whether it be a tornado, hurricane or an earthquake. the only real plan we have is to run to our basement, which at the moment is the safest location in my house. we definitely need a company like USGS because you should always be prepared for any type of natural disaster, we do have a company like USGS for Canada. I believe that the worst type of natural disaster to hit Barrie would be a tornado or a small earthquake such as the one that took place 2 years ago.

    1. You should build a titanium bunker in your basement

    2. I might be mistaken but I believe that, that idea is a little out of my price range. thank you for the suggestion though

    3. you should dig a hole underground and build a bunker under there

    4. I wouldn't call USGS a company, but a US government branch. Oh, and I have only found Canadian provincial geological surveys; what is the national Canadian survey called?

My family does not have a set plan for a natural disaster. when ever there is a tornado warning is issued we usually go into the basement. i assume we would do the same thing if any other type of storm were to come our way. seeing as my family doesnt have a plan i am greatful for organizations like the USGS. It is a good way to make sure that we as a country can help those in need of a few minutes warning to make sure we can be as safe as possible. I would like to see some Canadian stats and information about this topic after reading this article. I feel that a tsunami or a volcano would be the worst natural disasters if they were to hit barrie since it is so densly populated. However, there is a VERY slim chance that barrie will ever encounter these types of storms, so realisticly the worst type of stom to hit Barrie would be a tornado.

    8. Do you have any family or friends who may live in other areas at risk of severe storms? If so, do any of these people have plans in place in the event of a natural disaster?

My family is prepared for a natural disaster. We do have a plan. Our plan is to run into the basement into our cold room. It is probably the safest place in our basement to be in. We need agencies like USGS because they can help warn us of an imminent earthquake or tsunami. We do have one in Canada. I think that the worst natural disaster to hit Barrie would probably be a tornado because we aren't close enough to the sea for a tsunami and we sit in the middle of a plate in Canada so the chance of an earthquake is very low.

    1. sounds like your family is prepared for a tornado, but nothing else. you should stop being lazy and prepare for everything

    2. better prepare for a tsunami too, you don,t want to be washed out

    3. We are not near any fault lines, but the plate we are on is moving west at a decent pace (as far as techtonics goes), so new cracks can emerge in areas where high stress is forming. In the case of an earthquake like that, a cool room won't be the safest place. Though, I guess tornadoes and floods are much more likely here.

  3. My family is only prepared for a tornado unfortunately. My family is not prepared for any other natural disasters - especially a massive flooding. The roof of my house constantly leaks when it is raining a considerable amount outside. (Its raining as I am typing this. Hopefully it doesn't turn into a pouring rain scenario for hours). We need agencies such as USGS to warn us about severe weather ahead of time and we can prepare for the worst. Other than a zombie apocalypse, in my own opinion, I think a tornado or a massive flooding would be the worst disaster to hit Barrie because the residences are too close together and we are near bodies of water. Also if I remember correctly from a class I took at Central in my early years, that teacher told me that most of Barrie was underwater. There is one equivalent to USGS in Canada and here is the website for it: http://www.earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca. These predictions made by USGS are sufficiently accurate.

    1. Edit from my earlier post: "most of Barrie was underwater" to "most of Barrie was underwater thousands of years ago."

  4. My Family is prepared due to the fact we have lived off the land in the past doing it now would make no difference. But i would rather go to another relatives house in Brooklyn.
We need agencies like this so they can save lives before something awful was to happen in an area due to a natural disaster.
the worst natural disaster would be a tornado because you would lose everything you own. compared to a tsunami you would only lose electronics.
    these assumptions are very accurate.

  5. Mark this one; My family has no plans for if a natural disaster hits. I'm pretty sure everything we have (pets) would be screwed. I don't think I could pinpoint one natural disaster that would mess Barrie up because I'm pretty sure they all would. How many people are really prepared for a natural disaster? Whether it be a tornado, flood or earthquake, we aren't prepared because it doesn't happen often. We need agencies like USGS because i honestly have no idea what to do if a natural disaster hits let alone the precautions.
